MSW Field Practicum opportunities in residence at Casa Juan Diego, The Houston Catholic Worker
About Casa Juan Diego
Established in 1981, Casa Juan Diego is a transformative Social Work Field Practicum site focused on serving in solidarity the biological/psychological/sociological/spiritual needs of the new and established immigrant community in Houston, Texas.
CSWE Required Supervision
For CSWE compliance, on-site supervision is provided by a tenured Social Worker and faculty member at the University of Houston Downtown that holds both a Ph.D. in Social Work, as well as LMSW. Every day at Casa Juan Diego provides opportunities to demonstrate all 9 competencies!
Online MSW Students
For maximum use of time and efficiency in meeting field hour requirements, students can live in residence while completing their field practicum with full room and board (dorm room style housing, meals, toiletries, public transportation, Lyft support), and small stipend provided.
Supports Diverse Areas of Practice
This placement provides opportunities to engage directly with, 1) new arrivals from around the world, 2) issues of global migration and climate change, 3) local and national immigration policy, 4) faith-based social work practice, 5) health disparities and medical social work with immigrants, 6) migration-focused trauma informed practice, 7) advocacy, and more.
Requirements and Recommendations
1) As strongly encouraged, a working/basic knowledge of Spanish, French, Portuguese, or other relevant second language; and an understanding of the Catholic Worker philosophy of social change.
2) As required, students must carry professional liability insurance through NASW (National Association of Social Work) or through their own academic institution; and complete an online interview prior to an offer of acceptance.
