Monday, November 29 to Friday, Dec 17, 2021
Because of City construction, Casa Juan Diego’s buildings on Rose Street will be closed on the above dates to all but foot traffic on the sidewalk.
Rose Street between Shepherd and Durham will be closed in both directions. No vehicles of any kind will be allowed in or through. This includes delivery trucks, cars, and Metro Lift.
Major change in our food distribution
We will not be able to give out food to the poor on Rose Street from November 29 to December 17.
The Houston Food Bank has agreed to bring their large mobile truck with food that we can distribute directly from the truck on Lillian Street (819 Shepherd Drive/4811 Lillian) on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. beginning on November 30.
Casa Juan Diego Clinic closed from November 29, 2021, to January 3, 2022.
The Casa Juan Diego clinic will be closed during the street closure except for medication refills. To receive a refill on your medication, call 713 868-3242.
City Construction Project In This Area
The project to reduce both Shepherd and Durham to 3 lanes and a bike lane in the area near Casa Juan Diego is in full force. There are traffic impacts every day. This is also a larger infrastructure project. Sewage, water and drainage lines are all being addressed at the same time, as are paving projects for all the streets between Shepherd and Durham from Memorial to Washington Avenue. The overall project is expected to last a full 15 months.
We have been in regular contact with the project manager of the construction company. They have bent over backward to ensure that our operations are not interrupted the week before Thanksgiving and hopefully the week before Christmas as well.
There is a sewer pipe that runs between Shepherd and Durham down the center of Rose Street that is 15 feet below the street surface. This must be addressed soon in the project to allow the Shepherd storm drain construction to continue. Tearing up the street to this depth means Rose Street will have to be completely shut down to traffic during the time it takes to replace it.
We have been told that after December 17, Rose Street will be usable as it is today, but it will be gravel until March, when the repaving project will begin.
